Choosing an Excellent Offroad Hitch
For those of us who love the adventure that can only be found off the beaten path, we know how important it is to have the right equipment when you are off road. While being out in the wilderness is amazing, it also means that there are no stores, repair shops, or even cell phone service for miles and miles. What this means for us is that first, when we are out there we have to rely on ourselves, our preparation, and our equipment. And second, it means that our equipment, from our offroad hitch to our GPS, must be top notch and as hard working as we are.
When it comes to choosing an offroad hitch that isn’t going to let you down in the backwoods, it’s important to take these things into consideration:
- Does it connect easily and quickly?
- Is it low profile, in order to minimize the chance of door damage?
- Is it galvanized? Nothing is worse than a rusty offroad hitch.
- Does it have full bushings?
- Is it ADR accredited?
- Does it allow for all the angles that off roading is going to throw at you?
- Is the pin lockable?
If you can’t say yes to all of these things when thinking about your offroad hitch, then you need to find one that lets you say yes before taking off on your next adventure.
While there are probably many offroad hitches out there that meet the above requirements, for the sake of this article we’ll just focus on one, the OzHitch.
Created by Norm Hudson after a nightmare experience in the Australian outback with an inferior offroad hitch, the OzHitch was designed specifically to meet the needs of those driving an offroad vehicle and trailer off paved roads. After three incidents involving sand beds, a bad offroad hitch, and a frustrated off road adventurer, Hudson came home and developed the OzHitch, which meets all of the requirements above, and then some.
While you can’t plan for everything that you might encounter while off roading, you can have the best equipment with you. An excellent offroad hitch is one thing that you won’t want to leave the pavement without.
